Project Management Office (PMO) Implementation
The organizational entity responsible for project management capability has become known as the Project Management Office (PMO). PMOs are to be found in organizations that carry out many projects, whether internal or customer projects and have discovered the immense strategic benefit to be realized from having a permanent PMO. The investment in the PMO can be compared to the investment in the office of a CFO or controller—somebody must be responsible for building and maintaining the accounting infrastructure. Likewise, the PMO is responsible for the project management infrastructure. The investment in staffing PMOs is one example of the degree to which organizations consider project management a strategic strength. Could project management be a strategic strength for your organization? If yes, this service is for you.
A Project Management Office is critical to integrating project management into the culture and processes of your organization. To help you build your PMO faster, we can provide advice to address these key PMO success factors:
- Put the PMO in the right place in the organizational structure.
- Maximize effectiveness with appropriate authority and scope. • Clearly identify the PMO’s responsibilities.
- Advise on staffing of the PMO
- Develop a strong charter that keeps early PMO activities focused and establishes consistent expectations for the PMO among the stakeholders.
- Develop a PMO review and update plan because a PMO’s duties evolve as project management culture matures in an organization.

Principles of Project Management
This course presents proven techniques and tips that are applied by skilled and experienced project managers.
Specific techniques such as Work Breakdown Structure and Resource leveling, activity sequencing, duration and cost estimation are presented, with opportunities to practice each technique. Emphasis is placed not only on how to perform the technique, but also on when and why. It’s the knowledge every project manager needs to succeed.
As project management applies to all sectors, the material presented is relevant to every sector or industry. To support the effective application of the techniques learned, the project life cycle is related to development life cycles (process methodologies). In addition, real world project challenges, especially those unique to Africa, presented in class offer hands-on opportunities for participants to identify specific project management tools to help solve each problem.
This 5-day course is targeted at project managers and team leaders. Managers with multiple projects and team members with special assignments will get the greatest benefit from this course. Indeed anyone associated with projects will benefit from understanding the tools of project management that are covered in this course.
Practical Project Management
This is an accelerated learning course. More time is spent on practical aspects and techniques. The traditional instructor-led class is augmented with a planning workshop that provides an opportunity for participants to plan one of their own projects in class. By applying the course topics to their own project, individuals learn the concepts better and catch their mistakes in class. The workshop component is embedded in the course so that each lecture topic is immediately followed by the workshop component. For example, after the Work Breakdown Structure lecture, teams would create their own Work Breakdown Structure.
This 5-day course is targeted at project managers and team leaders and members who have a need to apply their knowledge immediately such those tasked with an upcoming project or project teams from the same department or organization.
Advanced Project and Risk Management Techniques
This course covers in greater detail selected topics from the Principles of Project Management course and then goes on to explore project risk management techniques.
Failure to proactively plan for and actively manage project risk is one of the most frequently cited causes of project failure. This course enables project managers to systematically manage the uncertainty inherent in every project to minimize the threats while maximizing opportunities. It’s a fine balance that the best project managers know how to achieve.
Participants will learn a step-by-step process to identify and respond to project risks that occur throughout the project life cycle, from the initial business case through implementation. They will also learn to establish specific budgets to account for both known and unknown project risks.
This is a 5-day course. The target audience for this course is project managers and others who have experience executing the principles of project management. This course requires previous attendance of our Principles of Project Management, Practical Project Management courses or similar courses or experience with the principles of project management.
Customized Courses
Courses can be customized for organizations that require only some modules of the standard courses, have time constraints or wish to apply certain techniques to very specific application areas.
